Introduction
Session 890 centers on how units of consciousness form the physical universe. The inner universe is a "pellet shape" formed by sentient energy fields, and every unit of consciousness contains within it the information of the whole. Units of consciousness transform into EE units, and only after filtering, selection, and countless intermediate steps do they form the smallest physical particles; the universe is born simultaneously from every point, rather than exploding linearly from a single singularity. Life, too, is not passed down from generation to generation, but is born simultaneously in every moment through the cooperation of various units of consciousness. The pseudo-matter of dreams condenses layer by layer into bodies and matter, and early humans rehearsed and learned to use their bodies in dreams before gradually acquiring life and identity.
Key Points of This Chapter
- The inner universe is formed into spherical shapes by fields of sentient energy; each unit of consciousness contains all information within itself, and operates in the manner of particles, waves, or fields.
- After units of consciousness transform into EE units, they pass through countless steps, filtering and selection, before forming even the smallest physical particle; the physical world is born simultaneously from every point.
- Life is not a linear passing down through generations, but is born simultaneously in each moment through the understanding and cooperation of the units of consciousness that compose the body.
- The different stages of dreams have different pseudo-matter, which gradually condenses into form and physical matter; early humans were like sleepwalkers, and only after rehearsing in dreams did they gradually learn to use the physical body.
- Information is shared among units of consciousness; the knowledge and experience gained by humanity is immediately perceived by other units of consciousness at other levels of activity; consciousness forms the experience of time.
Main Text
Hello everyone, I am Mike.
Today I will continue sharing with you Seth's book Dreams, "Evolution," and Value Fulfillment, Volume One, Session 890. This session began on Wednesday, December 19, 1979, at 9:17 p.m.1
As the time for the session approached, Jane was in an irritable mood. When I asked her whether she had any questions for Seth tonight, her attitude was both strange and sharp -- he did not say how it was strange and sharp, just that it felt very unfriendly. Then, she wanted to start at eight o'clock, but she did not succeed. So every time she connects with Seth, it is not the case that she can connect just because she wants to. At ten past nine, she said, "But now I feel he is nearby." She felt that Seth had arrived. Then, when the session began, her delivery was rather slow.
Then she began to deliver, and Seth said directly:
This inner universe is formed into a pellet shape by a field of aware energy.
He said that this inner universe, out of which our physical universe is given, is a pellet shape formed by a field of aware energy. Within it is contained what we will for now call information, but later we will make some comments, because this is not information in the sense you are accustomed to. What he means is that this pellet shape contains all information, but this information is not the information that we humans generally understand.
He said:
Each unit of consciousness inherently possesses within itself all the information available to the whole.
Each unit of consciousness possesses all of the information, the whole of it, all of it. Within a single unit of consciousness, there is all of the information of all the other units of consciousness. This idea -- that a single point contains everything, that any tiniest point contains all the information of the entire universe -- we call the holographic universe concept.
And when this unit of consciousness operates in a particle state, when it operates like a particle state, when it operates like a material form, its special nature depends upon that great inner body of knowledge as a whole. When it becomes particle-ized, when it exists as each independent individual, each individual within it has its own unique nature. Whether atom, molecule, or person, each of these units of consciousness, each individual, possesses its own unique characteristics. Where does its unique nature come from? It comes from that vast overall body of knowledge. And it itself inherently possesses this vast body of knowledge.
Only because the relative positions of all such other instances, and the circumstances of those instances, are known, can any such particle be what it is where it is and when it is.
These three parallel phrases are used with great force. Because every particle knows the positions of the other particles, whether absolute positions or relative positions, and the circumstances of each of those particles. It is because of this ability of theirs -- this ability to know the whole picture -- that they can be what they are where they are and when they are, that they can become themselves. This sentence is very profound.
All right, let us continue reading. It is precisely because each knows the information of the others that they each take their proper place and each fulfill their proper role, and each one does itself very well.
He said:
Here, in the deepest of terms, your physical world began at every point. At each of these points, these units of consciousness asserted themselves to form a physical reality.
He said that in essence, your universe was born beginning from every point of this universe. If you want to ask how this universe was born -- it was not, as you imagine, starting from one very small point and gradually expanding like a big bang. No. It simply emerged from every point of this universe, with a bang. I use this kind of imagery so you can understand -- like a big bang, but it is not the kind of linear development you imagine, starting from one point and becoming more and more, or a single point of explosion. No. It was born simultaneously from every point in this universe -- remember, every smallest unit. That is the kind of process it was.
So do not ask which came first, the chicken or the egg. The egg and the chicken were born simultaneously. Otherwise, life would not be passed down from generation to generation. If it were not this way, our lives would not be, as we imagine or as we perceive, passed down from generation to generation.
Here he put "passed down" in quotation marks. Is life passed down? No. Life is born anew at every moment, at its own point. In other words, each life, exactly as it is, at that moment in its present, at that point in its present, becomes its present self. All of this is just like when the universe was born -- it is all so perfectly, so fittingly born. So life is not handed down; life is created, is born, just like that. In other words, every second of our lives is a completely new beginning, and every second of our lives is being born.
It is not as you think, starting from a fertilized egg, bit by bit, and then developing all the way -- that is how we humans understand this universe and this world from a material perspective. From the material perspective, that is not wrong; that is how it is. But from the deepest -- remember his earlier phrase: "in the deepest of terms." Remember, whenever he says "deepest," he means speaking in the most ultimate way. So you understand that life is not born the way you think, passed down from generation to generation, father passing to son, son passing on again, descendants without end. It is not what you think. Father and son, son and grandson -- all of these are being born simultaneously.
Let us continue reading:
Each unit of consciousness intensified, magnified its own desire to exist, and you might say, ignited within itself an explosive spark of prime desire, into a process of physical materialization.
What does this mean? Let me give you an example so you can understand: as grandfather, as father, as son, as grandson, each of these four generations has a strong desire to announce its own existence. They all want to become themselves. Although they are in different times and spaces, and it seems as though they were all born from their mothers, in essence, at that point of their existence, at that present moment, at that instant, every cell in their body, every unit of consciousness within every cell, burst forth in just this way. That is, your entire body wants to become you, and you simply appear out of nowhere. I use this example so you can understand each of the units here. And there is no "passing down" as we understand it -- life is not passed down. Your grandson's life and his grandfather's life are equally vivid existences, both in this present moment, within this infinite time of the spacious present, and they are created simultaneously. The reason is that every unit of consciousness wants to be itself; it is intensifying and magnifying its own desire to exist, and so it comes alive. When every unit of consciousness comes alive, your life comes alive, and you have life.
This is how I help you understand it. So the birth of the universe is vastly different from what we imagine.
The units of consciousness became what I will call EE units.
EE units are electromagnetic energy units, or also called emotional energy units. Here he emphasizes again: units of consciousness are still too small, and a unit of consciousness is a purely conscious existence. Units of consciousness can generate our matter, but they cannot generate our matter in one step, cannot generate those particles; they must rely on a unit of meaning -- called an electromagnetic energy unit, or an emotional energy unit.
And in that fashion began their own kind of experience.
In what fashion? In the fashion of units of meaning, in a manner closer to materialization, to experience their existence. They cannot experience the existence of the physical world in the manner of pure units of consciousness.
He said that like the units of consciousness, these units of meaning also operate as "fields," as waves, or as particles.
Here he put "fields" in quotation marks. There are two purposes for the quotation marks: first, it tells you that this "field" is not different from the field of consciousness of the units of consciousness spoken of earlier -- you could also call it an emotional field, an energy field, or whatever kind of field; second, he says that this field is not the kind of electromagnetic field that we humans generally understand, that is, the kind of magnetic field, electric field, or force field -- it is not that kind of field. So he put it in quotation marks. As for the characteristics of this field, he explained them very thoroughly in the previous session when discussing the field of the units of consciousness, and it is similar.
In our human terms, it is more oriented toward matter. From our human perspective, looking from our end, it is closer to a material orientation; whereas units of consciousness are closer to a consciousness orientation. These two each have their own emphasis. Units of consciousness are closer to a purely conscious orientation, and they are weaker in material orientation -- they only have a will and an intent to become material, they have an intent toward materialization, and they have a material attribute within them, but they are not matter, and they do not have all the characteristics of matter. Although it is said that they can operate in a particle manner, that is only an analogy given to you. They must first condense into or aggregate into a unit of meaning -- that is, an electromagnetic energy unit or an emotional energy unit -- and only then do they possess the ability to manifest into the physical world. So the emphasis of the two is different: EE units lean toward matter, and units of consciousness lean toward consciousness.
It can be said that their patterns were already set.
He explains:
They already began those necessary, particularized filtering processes that would bring about physical form.
That is, the patterns of these EE units are already determined, already formed. What they want to become, or what they will become, is already determined. How is it determined? It is determined through a series of particularized filtering processes, and those filtering processes will bring about physical form for us.
What does this mean? Simply put, it has many forms to choose from, and which form does it ultimately choose? It sifts and filters, and it only selects what it wants. I do not know whether you can understand what he means -- that is, within a unit of consciousness there are all forms, all shapes, but when it is to manifest into specific matter, for example, when it is to form the smallest particle of the objective, or physical entity, in our specific physical world, it must have a form, it must make a choice, it must select from the many possible forms within the unit of consciousness one thing it wants to materialize. This is a process of selection, and also a process of filtering.
Those units of meaning began to process the information that would help form your world.
What information? It is the information that every unit of consciousness carries within it -- all of the universe, all of it, every particle, every position, and the relative positions and absolute positions of the particles. EE units begin to process this information, combining it in their own way -- through sifting, after processing this information, combining it according to their own will, what do they form?
To form the smallest of matter. There are literally numberless steps before the smallest physical particle is formed.
This sentence is the key point. How does this EE unit finally become a physical particle in the material world? Even if it is a quark, a particle, how does it become one of the thirteen most basic particles? He says that in this process -- remember, he even uses the word "literally" -- there really are numberless steps. What we have glossed over here involves countless steps in between.
He has spoken of this process before. Simply put, it is somewhat like entering a black hole: units of consciousness enter tiny black holes invisible to our naked eyes -- we can describe it this way -- and after entering these tiny black holes, they are empowered, or charged, by energy from another dimension, or you could say they are charged by your emotions, by your will, by your energy. But this charging is completed on the other side of the black hole, that is, after being sucked into the black hole. On this end, our physical world cannot see it, and we do not know its process. Moreover, what is sucked in is also EE units, not a material thing at all; we can only use the tiny black hole as an analogy. Then, after it is fully charged, or after its energy is raised very, very high, it is like a white hole -- a white hole will spew things outward. A black hole sucks things in, and at the other end of the universe there is a white hole, but we humans have never observed it, have never observed the existence of a white hole; we can only imagine it. Then at the other end of the white hole, matter spews out from that end.
Because of this empowerment of energy, the process between the black hole and the white hole is impossible to describe in words; there is no way to describe it -- how it is accelerated, how the energy is added, and in which dimension this dimension lies, and what adds the energy to it, and how the energy is added, and so on. He omitted all of this and did not discuss it. I am only telling you so that you can roughly understand it. Then, after the energy is increased, many units of consciousness -- he has roughly said before, perhaps tens of thousands, tens of thousands of units of consciousness, or perhaps millions; I cannot remember exactly which number he said, but it is roughly on the order of ten thousand, and tens of thousands and millions are actually about the same, on this order of magnitude of ten thousand -- this many units of consciousness will form one tiny electromagnetic unit, and after this electromagnetic unit is charged, when it returns to our physical world, or bursts out into our physical world, it is a tiny particle, the most basic particle -- not an atom; an atom is not the most basic particle, it is a particle smaller than an atom, the most basic particle. But there are numberless steps in this process, and he skipped over them, because those are indeed too complex, since humanity's understanding of black holes and white holes is still limited to this day.
And these tiny black holes, he also said: you only know about black holes and white holes, but have you ever wondered whether there are red holes, green holes, multicolored holes, rainbow holes, gold holes, silver holes, transparent holes? He uses these colors as an analogy -- they have different natures. Like the nature of a black hole, a black hole sucks matter in, and it spews out from the other side; that is one nature, and we call this thing a black hole. Then is there also something called a red hole -- where everything that goes in has its positive and negative reversed, its polarity swapped, or something like that? Is there also a blue hole, where after entering there are other kinds of changes? He says there are, only you humans do not know. A single black hole and white hole already exceeds your scope of understanding and cognition; if I tell you about red holes, purple holes, green holes -- all kinds of dimensional, energetic processes, or the process of material manifestation from consciousness to matter, under the empowerment of energy, under the guidance of conscious intent, it is extremely complex. Because matter is not just one kind of matter. A black hole is a very easy thing to understand -- it is enough for you to understand up to this point.
The greatest and most gentle process of selection also occurred here.
Besides the numberless steps in between, he also tells you that in this process there also occurred the greatest and most gentle -- see, still gentle -- process of selection. That is the filtering process he mentioned earlier, which can also be understood as a process of choosing -- that is, it must choose what it wants to become. Here a choice is made from among many possibilities; it chooses what it wants to become.
You might say, is this not very simple? Why does he use the word "greatest"? I want to become an atom, is that not very simple? This is extremely complex. Why is it extremely complex? Imagine that every tiny point in the entire universe is fittingly itself, and while realizing its own value fulfillment, it also accomplishes the value fulfillment of others. Just like your body, which requires countless cells -- composed of 50 trillion cells2, and each cell is composed of who knows how many tens of thousands of atoms and molecules. Then these atoms and molecules, when they constitute your human body, they each take their places in an instant. So how do they each take their places? Can you understand how this great choice and gentle selection comes about? It is this great, this gentle. There is no scrambling, no contention -- saying I want to do this, I want to be the eyes, I want to be the heart, I want to be the brain cells, I want to be this part. No, there is no scrambling, no contention. Everyone knows -- one cannot say everyone -- every particle knows what it should do, in what manner, in what form it should exist. Such a state forming the state of the universe is very great.
Do not forget the biggest point here: every particle has intent. It is not following the universe's command -- you must do this, like a screw -- no, it has its own intent: I, this particle, want to do this, I want to become a molecule that makes up this cell; I, this cell, want to form such a group of cells with other cells; then such a group of cells wants to form such a tissue with other groups of cells, to form such an organ, to form such a human being; so many human beings want to form such a human society and human civilization on this earth -- and so on, you can keep going upward. And every one, from the largest, to the starry seas, down to the smallest particle of matter, every one fittingly stays in its own position, and every one fulfills its own wishes and longings and desires -- it is itself that wants to do this. So you understand that the wonder of this great and gentle process of selection he speaks of lies here.
A unit of consciousness can become any person, can become anything. But here, when it is to concretize and materialize, when it is to specialize into a specific thing, it must make a decision: What do I want to do? What do I want to become? In this process, it undergoes an enormous process of selection -- choosing the most fitting one from among countless, infinite possibilities, and this process he calls the greatest and most gentle process of selection.
These units at a certain operational level released themselves from their larger fields of information, to specialize into various components that would allow the faultless production of the atoms and molecules that would suit your world.
What he means is that these EE units -- that is, electromagnetic energy units -- in this process of materialization, it is a process of, so to speak, peeling themselves out from an energy field, or concretizing themselves out of it. They originally also belong to a very vast energy field, similar to the energy field of the units of consciousness. In this energy field, they must manifest their concretized or specialized individuality. In that energy field, they are an integrated whole; they can be all things, and all things can be them. But when they concretize into one thing, they can no longer be the whole; they must concretize. Although they have the knowledge and information of the whole, they must select one from this whole, from the overall information -- I want to do this, and here I mean the smallest particle.
So they manifest out of that vast energy field and become a specific material thing. And this process of specializing themselves into various different components, and then concretizing themselves, precisely suits -- see, he uses the word "faultless," meaning without any error -- the formation of the most basic material units that our world happens to need to compose our world, these atoms and these molecules.
Let us not go into such fine detail for now -- just like this, he explains how the universe was born. He does not intend to unfold the entire process for you, to explain every step in detail. That is to say, the atoms and molecules of our world were born just so fittingly, so accurately. Here he uses the phrase "faultlessly suit," so why does he use the word "suit"? You should carefully ponder the flavor of this -- it is because in the dream, it already knows what our physical world is composed of. Does it not already know this world in its dream world? Because every point possesses all the information of the entire universe; it knows. So it knows that for the physical universe to form, it will certainly need these basic particles, atoms, and molecules, and so it turns itself into atoms and molecules, and therefore the word "suit" is used. This is very interesting -- "suit" also has another meaning, which is that it is willing, right? It is not forced, no one commands it -- you must become this -- no, it is what it wants itself. This "suit" is very interesting; savor the flavor in it carefully.
At this point, Jane truly moved from the fluent, resonant voice with which she had last spoken for Seth into a softer manner. Jane's voice in this session was relatively soft, unlike the previous session -- the previous one was forceful and powerful, almost like delivering a speech.
Then Seth said:
First of all, again, you have different stages of pseudomatter in dream images.
At the beginning of this book, his material is all very difficult -- every sentence could be expanded into a thesis topic. Pseudomatter appears again.
You have different stages of pseudomatter in dream images. What does this mean? Let me explain it to you -- this sentence passes by in a flash; if you do not ponder it, it is gone, as if it were very simple. The core point here is: different stages of dream images. Remember that your dreams are also divided into stages. That is, the birth of this universe, in human terms, has stages. Although we know it was born simultaneously, let us say that within the stages of dreams -- in early dreams, middle dreams, and later dreams, in the different stages of dreams, there will be images in your dreams. Then those images in dreams, he gives them a name here: pseudomatter. He mentioned a pseudofigure earlier, remember? Sidal Form, remember? He spoke of a pseudofigure earlier. Here he brings up pseudomatter.
Let us see how he explains this pseudomatter. That is, in the different stages of the dream state, this pseudomatter is different. You must remember why this point is emphasized here -- that is, in the different levels of the different stages of dreams, you could call them the different levels of dreams, this pseudomatter is different. In the dream of All That Is, it is that way; in the dream within the units of consciousness, it is that way; in the dream of the EE units, it is that way; in the dream of the atom, it is that way. Can you understand what I mean? In the dreams of different levels, the images of this pseudomatter are different. This may be a little hard to understand; think about it carefully. Here he is discussing the dream state.
Also, he uses our human dreams as an example for everyone -- that is, the symbols in your dreams of different levels, different depths, are different. If we bring that concept in, you can understand it. The symbols in the dream of All That Is, and the dream images of the final EE units or even atoms, are not the same. Do not assume they are the same. Are the dream of All That Is and the dream of the final atom the same dream? Are they the same as your dream? No. So you can understand, is your dream the same as the dream of All That Is? No, because you are in different levels of dreams.
What is the difference? To put it more simply, the more concrete, the further upward you go -- that is, the units formed by this consciousness, for example, from units of consciousness forming units of meaning, units of meaning forming atoms, atoms forming molecules, molecules forming cells -- the further upward this thing goes, the bigger this thing becomes. From the original units of consciousness all the way to a cell, it becomes bigger and bigger, and its dream becomes more concrete, and its images become more concrete. Why? Because after the earlier sifting, after a process of selection, its dream becomes more concrete. The further down it goes, reaching into the units of consciousness, the more abstract its dream becomes. Whether concrete images or abstract images, they are all pseudomatter; they are not yet true matter, because at this point matter has not yet formed.
Then Seth continued:
That gradually coalesced, so to speak.
To use that kind of phrasing, "gradually" -- because saying "gradually" means there is a time span. He uses that kind of phrase from this angle. Condensation is also a process, so it can only be described as "gradual" -- condensation cannot just pop; if it pops, that is not condensation, that is transformation. Condensation is like crystallization, or like coagulating: something slowly, slowly solidifies into a thing, and that state is called condensation. He says this process can only be told to you through this analogy: from the angle that involves time, it gradually condenses downward. What condenses downward? Pseudomatter condenses downward.
Pseudomatter slowly condenses downward, becomes a formed shape, and then it becomes something that has living capacity in physical form.
Remember, this pseudomatter at these different levels is not just one kind, not just one category; the types of pseudomatter at different levels are different. At the final layer -- let us just say when we reach the physical layer -- this pseudomatter becomes a form with living capacity, becomes something with shape, becomes something physically capable of living. Because this pseudomatter begins to condense, it becomes such a physical entity.
Because between the matter you recognize and the antimatter of physicists' theory, there are countless kinds of matter.
He says this sort of in passing. He says: What have your human scientists been studying all along? Matter and antimatter. Scientists have reasoned that antimatter must exist in this world. And how much of the entire universe is the actual matter that scientists can now observe? It is 4.9 percent or 4.98-something percent3 -- that is to say, the matter we recognize makes up less than 5 percent of the whole universe. What about the rest? The rest scientists say is composed of dark matter and dark energy; they call it dark matter or dark energy, and also call it antimatter.
Then Seth says, your scientists are thinking too simply. If you think simply, you can also figure it out, right? According to scientists, if matter exists then antimatter exists; the moment antimatter and matter touch they disappear, and the world is destroyed. So many science fiction stories use this trope -- once something bizarre happens, the whole world disappears. They all use this trope: once human beings discover antimatter, the antimatter and ordinary matter instantly vanish. It is like electron annihilation: a positron and an electron meet, pop, they are gone; positive and negative charges meet, neutralize, and disappear; positive charge is gone and negative charge is gone, becoming a chargeless state. So when ordinary matter and antimatter meet, they become a world without matter. All human science fiction says this.
But he tells you again: not so. Suppose our ordinary matter accounts for 5 percent of the whole universe, then antimatter also only accounts for 5 percent, and the two together only make 10 percent. You say, no, antimatter could be more -- impossible. If antimatter were more, then it would no longer be called ordinary matter and antimatter, right? It would have to be some other matter. So this is only human scientists' way of speaking, and we use their terminology for the moment. What Seth wants to tell you is that it is not that simple. There is not just one kind of antimatter -- your human scientists merely deduce one kind of antimatter -- he says there are many, many other kinds, countless kinds of matter.
Is this again beyond your cognition and understanding? Yes -- you have not even figured out one kind of matter, and he tells you there are countless kinds of matter in this world. Not countless things, but countless kinds of matter. All the matter in our three-dimensional world is one kind -- all the universe we can perceive, measure, and observe, the matter in it is one kind, all called one kind of matter, just called "matter." Then scientists guess there may be antimatter. Seth says it is not only antimatter; there is green matter, red matter, purple matter, all kinds of matter. He tells you this is more complicated than you imagine. Why is it this complicated? Because the dream images at different levels have different pseudomatter, so the matter they correspond to is also different -- pseudomatter at different levels corresponds to matter at different levels, and therefore there are different kinds of matter.
In other words, from another angle, forms exist on many other levels besides those you recognize.
What does this sentence mean? It means the matter we see today is made of layer upon layer of different pseudomatter superimposed until it becomes what we see today. It comes layer by layer by layer; you can also call it projected in from different dimensions -- in Teacher Liu Feng's words, it is a projection from higher dimensions into lower dimensions. The matter of today is a projection from a higher-dimensional world's consciousness into a lower-dimensional world, and it becomes matter. But actually the process in between is more complicated than that.
Where is the complexity? Each layer has its own pseudomatter. Then, for this layer of matter that we humans can perceive, that our five senses can perceive, where does its shape come from? It comes from the layer upon layer beneath it, from different dream stages, from those dream-image forms, from different pseudomatter images, finally forming the shape of what we today call true matter. Is this a bit hard going? No problem; rest a little, slow down, and I will make an analogy.
This relates to the dream levels -- I forget in which layer Seth discussed it -- in The Nature of Personal Reality, I think there are chapters near the end, Chapter 18 or Chapter 19, specifically about dream levels, consciousness levels, and levels within dreams, where he discussed this issue: at the deepest layer of dreams, it is very abstract, so abstract that eventually your consciousness cannot perceive it, cannot perceive it at all; at the surface layer of dreams, it becomes more and more concrete. Can you understand this? But where does the concrete thing come from? It all comes from the deepest, most abstract place.
That is to say, how does our physical world come about? These forms -- cats look like cats, dogs look like dogs, what the leaves of this plant look like -- where do they come from? They all come from the deepest dream of All That Is, or from the earliest dream. But in the earliest dream, did the leaf look the way it does now? No. It iterated layer by layer until it became the shape of the leaf we see today. From its later source, its root, to the final materialization of this leaf, it passed through countless layers of evolution. So this sentence means that the form you see -- the shape of the leaf we see today -- is generated by forms or bodies on levels beyond, or within, those layers we cannot see, other levels of form or shape, and that generates the shape of today's leaf. He says:
You have this already simplified.
It has already been simplified. Keep up as much as you can, and try to understand -- the birth of the universe is not a very simple process. You can also think of it as very simple, but after all it is not such a simple matter. We cannot just brush past a very complex thing with one stroke. But many religions can say it that way, right? They just say heaven and earth were created, God created them, and it ends in one simple sentence, because they do not want to tell you these details, and they think you do not need to know them. Seth is the kind of person who pokes a hole through the sky, who breaks through the dome; he insists on explaining this clearly to you, insists on doing this. It is very interesting, and we are very fortunate to be able to hear, from his angle, how this universe came to be.
Your dream forms are just as real as your concrete forms.
Remember, the form you have in dreams and your concrete physical form are equally real. But he did not say they are exactly identical -- this must be understood. Do not take "equally real" to mean that the original dream appearance was like this, so therefore our appearance is like this -- no. There is a process of becoming concrete layer by layer; it is only on another level of activity. Dreams operate on the dream level of activity, and our physical body operates on the physical body's level of activity. They suit their own environments -- the dream body fits the dream environment, and the physical body in waking reality fits the physical body's environment.
And quite reminiscent of the forms that existed at the beginning of your world.
He says such a dream form very easily reminds you of the time when the universe was just beginning to form -- when this physical world of yours was just beginning to form, what was your body like at the very start? It was the same as the dream body. If you do not know what the human body was like at the birth of the universe, then use the feeling you have of your own body in dreams to experience it. In a dream, is your body real? It is real. In a dream, do you feel that you are unreal? No. In a dream, everything you have is real, the most real feeling, right? But is that realness the same as the realness of this physical body after you wake up? It seems not the same, and yet you cannot say exactly where the difference lies. Isn't the subtlety here?
Although you and all the other species, at that time, were what I call sleepwalkers.
We and the other species, at that beginning -- here it refers to the very beginning of the universe -- Seth says, I call them sleepwalkers. Just like present-day sleepwalkers, they do not know what they are doing: he walks, he moves, he performs all actions; some even go to the kitchen and get something to eat, but he has no conscious awareness at all. That kind of state. I call the state of early humans and other species the sleepwalker state.
Although you were sleepwalkers, your bodies could already function.
Can the bodies of sleepwalkers function? Of course they can -- they can go downstairs, open doors, go outside, they can do all kinds of things.
And in a way, from a certain angle, at that time you did not yet know how to use the body correctly.
Meaning your body could be used, but you did not know how to use it. It is like sleepwalkers: can the body be used? It can. Is it used well? No. Is it agile? Not agile. Have you ever seen a sleepwalker? If not, go online and find some surveillance videos of sleepwalking and watch them; that is the state -- can the body be used? It can. Is it used well? Not well.
For one thing, from a waking state, you do not understand how your dream bodies seem to fly through the air, to defy space and even defy time, and to converse with strangers, and so forth.
He says why in your waking state -- that is, early humans, the state we call waking -- it is actually like sleepwalking. But they were awake; it gave people the feeling of sleepwalking. While in that state, you do not understand how the dream body can fly into the air, how it can transcend the limits of time and space, violate the limits of time and space, and how it can converse with strangers -- strangers across time and space. That sleepwalking you does not know how, in a dream, you do these things.
However, in the same way, at one time you had to learn to cope with gravity, with space and time, to manipulate in a world of objects, simply to breathe, to digest your food, and to perform all the biological manipulations you now take for granted.
Seth emphasizes this very strongly. What does he mean here? He wants to say that these early entities -- that is, early humans, just after the universe was born -- what state were they in? They were in this kind of state: when awake, in what we humans now call the waking state, he needed simply to breathe, eat simple things, and then perform these manipulations that we consider biologically inevitable -- he also needed to urinate and defecate, and he could handle all of these. But he was hazy and muddled; he did not know why. Because he spent most of the time sleeping, and he did not realize that while he was sleeping -- for him, sleep was the real beginning of life, and the dream world was more real to him. When he was sleeping, he could transcend these time and space limitations and could fly freely in the sky. He was in these two states at the same time, and he was somewhat dazed.
What does it feel like? It is like many of us who learn out-of-body experience -- some people can have out-of-body experiences -- the feeling of going out of body and the feeling of waking up. At night you go out of body; during the day you have to live according to the laws of the three-dimensional world. Flying is impossible, and crossing time and space is also impossible. Then that early human was a bit dazed: how can this be? So he was operating a physical body and also operating a dream body; he was operating in both worlds at the same time. At that point he had not yet distinguished which was more real between the physical world and the dream world, whether one was real and the other not; to him both worlds were quite real.
You could not afford to identify too strongly with such a body.
What does it mean that you could not afford to identify too strongly with this body? It means you did not want to identify with this physical body; you could not afford it -- that is, you were not yet skillful at operating it, you did not want this physical body, and you wanted to fly around freely and cross time and space. But you also wanted to experience this three-dimensional world, and you had to experience it through this body. Therefore there was this situation: "you could not afford to identify too strongly with this body."
Until you learned how to survive within it.
That means until we humans became skilled at operating our bodies and could survive very well in the physical world -- picking wild fruit, hunting, and so on -- until we could use our bodies freely in this physical world, only then did we develop a deeper identification with it.
Let me give a vivid example to help you understand. For example, we have all seen the movie Avatar; let us use Avatar as an example. The Avatar body required the consciousness of that American soldier to be poured into it -- at that time it was a science fiction movie, and they invented a device that could transfer a person's consciousness into that body, into the image of that being on the Avatar planet. Do you remember that at first he was extremely unfamiliar with this body? He could not operate it -- do you remember that he smashed the lab to pieces and ran outside?
Physically speaking, this American soldier was disabled, sitting in a wheelchair, with no lower limbs. But after his consciousness was implanted into the Avatar body, through a period of familiarization and adaptation, he could eventually run as if flying. Do you remember the movie? The first thing he did after running out of the lab was run outdoors, because he had been an amputee for a long time and had almost forgotten the feeling of running.
I use this movie example to help you understand that early humans were very much like this state: not very familiar with this physical body, not especially skilled at operating it; they could walk and use it, but not skillfully, and they could not use this body to solve basic problems of survival and food and warmth. Therefore he had no sense of identification with it.
Later, as he became more and more familiar with his body, more and more skilled at operating it -- just like in the movie Avatar, he could ride the flying dragon and go into battle, and after his manipulation of the body became increasingly adept -- what happened at the end of the movie? His identification with this body became greater than his identification with his real self lying inside the experimental apparatus. He identified more with the new identity formed after his soul -- that is, his consciousness -- combined with that Avatar body. So he decided not to come back. Do you remember the end of the movie? He and another female on that planet -- you might call her female, an alien -- they fell in love, and he did not come back.
That movie has very deep meaning in it; think carefully whether that is so. It actually reveals a certain point, a certain stage in early humans' control of the body -- exactly that kind of state. We humans in early times were the same way, the same principle, exactly the same. As our cognition of this body became more and more definite, our identification with this physical body -- until one day it made us ignore or abandon our identification with that dream body, or with the body of the inner world of our soul, the inner astral body. We identify more with this external physical world and physical body, and our identification with it grows day by day. So I use this example to help people understand.
Therefore in the dream state, when these new bodies and earth-oriented consciousnesses saw their own psychic rehearsals.
What does "earth-oriented consciousness" mean? It is consciousness with an earth orientation, that is, a materialized orientation of consciousness. Its consciousness has many orientations -- it has the orientation of the dream body, and also the orientation toward the physical body. That is, these new bodies, with a consciousness that identified more with the physical world, saw their own psychic rehearsals -- meaning that everything in dreams is psychic rehearsal. While all these parts of the body were seen, in dreams they learned this rehearsal of the body, which is called psychic rehearsal.
The true process of life had begun.
He is saying for the first time how your life came about. It was through the dream body's continuous operation, practice, and familiarization; after becoming familiar, then operating in this physical body, it is just like the soul, or that spirit, gradually moving from your dream body into the physical body. When your physical body had this soul, had this consciousness, only then did you have life. Before that, although he had a physical body, he did not have life.
Can you understand? It is like saying a walking corpse -- using zombies as an analogy is not very good, but that is the meaning. A zombie has no soul, but can walk and move. Or using a person in a vegetative state is better: he has a body, all functions are intact, but does he have life? You could say he has life, he has physical life, but does he have consciousness? Is he like a person? He is no longer -- from a certain sense of consciousness, right? He has no response or elevation of life. But his subconscious knows all of this -- but that is another topic for now.
The meaning of what we are discussing is this: when you rehearse the operation and familiarization of the various parts of the body in dreams, becoming more and more familiar, more and more familiar, then you gradually spend more and more time in this physical body, in this material body, until eventually you no longer go back; you just stay inside this body, and your life begins in this way. Interesting, right? So you must understand that the existence of your life, how your life came about, came about in this way.
This is also why you have no memories from before age three, or even before age five. What was happening at that stage? At that stage your consciousness was moving in and out, back and forth between the dream body and the waking physical body, and its acceptance of this body was not 100 percent, so your life could not yet be called truly begun. Although we know that as soon as a child is born, its life begins, there is still such a process -- and only when you truly have a cognition of the self, when you truly begin to have memory, does your life begin. I am telling you this from this angle, so do not make it absolute; do not say that before age three there is no life. That is not what I mean; you must understand the meaning within this.
Behind all of that was the brilliant understanding and cooperation of all the units of consciousness that composed the body.
That is, behind the beginning of your life, there is the brilliant understanding and cooperation of all the units of consciousness that integrate this body. What does this mean? The 50 trillion cells2 that make up your body, each cell has tens of thousands of atoms and molecules and such things; each of their units of consciousness, their combination, their brilliant mutual understanding and cooperation, is the most core and most fundamental thing in the birth of your life. So here he tells you that behind this life is these -- behind your life is a crystallization, a result of the combination and cooperation of countless units of consciousness.
Each adding its own information and special knowledge to the entire body organization.
Each unit of consciousness adds its own specialized knowledge and specialized information into this overall body. That is, every unit of consciousness and every cell participates in the composition of this body organization.
Each involved in the most intricate fields of relationship.
The interactions are certainly complex. Between every cell and cell, organ and organ, tissue and structure, they are all constantly interacting; this kind of intricate field is unimaginable.
For the miracle of the body's efficiency exists as the result of the relationships among all its parts.
Your body is so efficient, your body operates so effectively; its miracle lies in the result of the interaction among the relationships of all parts. It produces what you see as a person whose movements are so free -- that is, you point and it hits the mark, and the body operates so freely, all as a result of the interaction of these various parts.
And it connects the body with other levels that do not concretely appear.
What are our other levels? They are those other levels of the units of consciousness, which our physical eyes cannot see. It is through their connection and support that we have the real, effective operation of this physical body. This is what you cannot see.
The units of consciousness turned themselves into EE units -- remember, the units of consciousness turned themselves into EE units, into electromagnetic energy units -- in what you may call a circular rather than a linear manner, and in the same process formed the environment and its inhabitants.
This sentence is very important. Why circular rather than linear? We will later take up this question separately and expand on it; we will discuss it in some other lessons. In this process of consciousness becoming matter -- that is, how we enter the third dimension from higher dimensions, or the process of this three-dimensional world -- Seth explained it as clearly as he could, but in it he still omitted a lot of basic information, and we will supplement this part in other lessons as much as we can. But this is already a very deep exploration.
Most people may not be interested in this any longer. Most people are not even interested in the questions Seth discusses, except those who truly want to probe the mysteries of the universe and the birth of the universe. For ordinary daily life, it is enough to know these things roughly. Because you do not need to understand them this clearly -- just as you do not need to understand how every chip in a mobile phone is designed and operates, or how every transistor came to be; you do not need that, you only need to know how to use it. And this level is all about exploring these questions.
So he tells you: when units of consciousness turn into EE units, it is in a circular way rather than a linear way -- that is, at the same time, it forms the environment and the inhabitants in the environment. The inhabitants of the environment are all things -- the inhabitants of the environment are not just people; here he uses the noun "inhabitants," but it does not mean -- who are the inhabitants in the environment? They are all things. It simultaneously formed the environment and the things within the environment, at the same time. His meaning is not that the environment came first, and then the environment evolved before there were creatures and animals inside it; that is not what he means. His meaning is that the environment and the things within it, the various species, were born simultaneously, not through linear evolution.
Of course, in those terms, there are other varieties of concrete manifestation of consciousness. Not only this one planet and its inhabitants, but an entire sentient gestalt of consciousness?
From this angle, is there not only this one physical world of Earth? Are the worlds and physical worlds of other star systems different from ours? Is this what he wants to tell you? Yes.
In those terms, each portion of physically oriented consciousness views reality and experience from its own particular viewpoint, and everything else seems to revolve around it. Although this may involve a general field smaller or larger than your own.
Here you may again not know what he wants to say. What he wants to say is -- let me see what kind of language I can organize for you -- what he wants to say is: although your consciousness is within a field of consciousness, you are a whole, all things are a whole, all within one unified field of consciousness, that is, one body, unified; he said earlier that the whole of consciousness is one. Although this one contains countless tiny units of consciousness, which he discussed in the previous session.
What is he trying to tell you? Once this unit of consciousness finally materializes, after it forms a concrete individual -- for example, a concrete person, a certain person Zhang San. As far as Zhang San is concerned, once this Zhang San is formed, what is Zhang San formed from? From units of consciousness, right? The units of consciousness ultimately compose this Zhang San. But Zhang San then forms a gestalt of consciousness.
Units of Consciousness and the Individual's Perspective
Zhang San as a gestalt of consciousness is formed by the combination of all the units of consciousness that make up Zhang San, and this is Zhang San's consciousness. Zhang San can only understand this world from his own angle of consciousness, his own conscious feelings, his own level of consciousness. He takes himself as the center, believing that all things revolve around him, that he is creating his world -- this is Seth's most classic line, "You create your own reality through your beliefs." Zhang San uses his own unique consciousness and unique perspective to look at this world, and then it will form a new field of consciousness centered on itself.
Relative to the entire field of consciousness, you could say this field of consciousness is smaller, or you could say it is larger. The size here has no concrete meaning on the level of consciousness, because the largest has no outside, and the smallest has no inside. So which field includes which? The larger field of consciousness includes this person's field of consciousness -- from a certain angle, you could say that; but from Zhang San's angle, no. Zhang San believes his field of consciousness is the largest. Although he can be aware of the existence of a larger field of consciousness, within his cognitive world, he always takes himself as the core, as the center, to look at this universe and at his surrounding environment.
And he and his surrounding environment are produced simultaneously. It is not that the earth came first, the earth produced animals, animals eventually became humans, evolved into humans, and humans produced consciousness -- no, all of this, every bit of it, is produced simultaneously.
Here we touch on the question of the field of consciousness, which is a basic characteristic of consciousness. Do not blame consciousness, saying, "Why can't you also take others into account?" -- it does have places where it takes others into account. Within a unified field, it is every part, it is any part, it is all, it is taking everything into account. But in the process of its materialization, when it becomes concrete and wants to experience present material existence, whether as the existence of an atom or the existence of an individual person, it only wants to look at the world from its own perspective. It has a larger perspective; you do not need to worry about it on its behalf. It has always had a global view, except that this global view is not on this material level, but on the level of its energy field -- it has always considered problems from a global angle; but on the present material level, it has always considered problems from its own angle.
All consciousness is like this. Therefore, to a stone, you can be considered its environment. As a human, regarding a rock, you think that trees are our human environment; from the tree's angle, we humans are its environment -- it is the subject, and we are its environment. And at the same time, you can also consider them merely as part of your environment. The stone considers you its environment, and you consider the stone your environment.
Differences in Awareness Between Humans and All Things
Seth continued:
And in actuality, many other kinds of consciousness, each focusing in their own individual ways, have a far deeper awareness of the nature of the earth's unity than man does. But man, going his own way, also adds to the value fulfillment of all other consciousnesses in ways that are quite unknown to ordinary systems of knowledge.
Earlier it was said that every consciousness takes itself as the center — man takes himself as the center, a stone takes itself as the center. So how do all these many kinds of consciousness interact with one another? Aside from man, all other things know that they have an inner connection with the consciousness of the earth — they have more intuition than man about the unified nature of the earth. Man's awareness of the unity of nature and the earth is something he can only acquire through later learning and insight; he is not born with it. Man feels that he is separate from these outer things, and does not consider himself to be one with them. But all other things besides man — including animals, including plants, including rocks — know that they and the earth are one.
Remember what I said at the very beginning about the Datre material on animals: animals know, man does not know. From this angle, man seems to be the dumbest one, the most ignorant, the least aware. Even animals know that they are one with all things, but man does not know, and man still struts around feeling that he is unique, that all things are his subjects, that he is the lord of creation.
But then he goes on to say that although man is less aware than other species on this level, man — in a way that our ordinary intellect finds very hard to understand — in the very process of walking his own path of developing self-consciousness, in the process of developing a self-consciousness that is separate from all things, cut off, with a strong sense of separation — precisely in this process, he also adds to the value fulfillment of other species, rather than destroying it.
That is to say, although man lacks the awareness of unity compared to animals, this does not mean that man is the destroyer of this universe. Man, in a way different from theirs, while completing his own value fulfillment, also adds to the value fulfillment of other species. This is a point that many people easily misunderstand. Seth emphasized this issue in the first part of the preface to this book, where he elaborated at length on the matter of neutering cats: man is not the destroyer of this physical world; on the contrary, we are also part of nature. Whether we are aware of it or not, we are part of nature. Because we are composed of units of consciousness, as long as these units of consciousness are functioning, as long as we are still within this unified field of consciousness, our existence adds to other existences rather than destroying them. So do not have this groundless idea of heaping guilt upon yourself, as if we are destroying the environment, destroying the universe, as if we are a tumor on the earth.
Information Sharing Among Units of Consciousness
Seth went on to say:
If you remember that basically each unit of consciousness is aware of the position of every other unit, and that these units form all matter, then perhaps you can intuitively understand what I mean.
You might want to ask: why are humans different from all other things, lacking the awareness of oneness with all things in nature, and how can humans also be of benefit to other species? Seth answered: because every unit of consciousness knows the position and existence of every other unit of consciousness, and also knows their information and state. Therefore, a human being composed of units of consciousness, within this field of consciousness, is certainly of benefit to all other units of consciousness.
He said, "then perhaps you can intuitively understand what I mean" -- he may have overestimated himself. Perhaps many people reading this do not understand it, and cannot understand his meaning through intuition.
For whatever knowledge man attains, whatever experience any one person can accumulate, whatever art or science you produce, all such information is instantly perceived by every other unit of consciousness that composes that physical reality, on other levels of activity.
Whatever you do, whatever you experience, whatever you accumulate, whatever you create, whatever you invent, whatever you feel, whatever you undergo -- all of it, every bit of it, is perceived by any other unit of consciousness in the universe on their own level of activity. Why? The premise is that every unit of consciousness knows the absolute position and relative position of every other unit of consciousness, and also knows their circumstances. No matter how many units of consciousness there are in this world -- a number beyond counting -- every single one is that remarkable. Why does it possess this attribute? Because it itself also possesses the attribute of an energy wave; it possesses two attributes at once. The material attribute you see is particle after particle, and from the material level you cannot understand why it possesses such a powerful capacity; but when you return to the perspective of the unified field of consciousness composed of units of consciousness, all of this becomes so simple.
That is to say, why is anything you experience beneficial to all of your reincarnational selves? Why is your studying the Seth material here today beneficial to you, to all of humanity, and even to all things in the universe? Because you have learned it, you have understood it -- not only has your conscious level understood it, but all the units of consciousness that compose you have understood it. To say "understood it" is actually not quite right; it would be better to say that on your conscious level, it has been re-remembered by them. Because they already had this knowledge long ago; you simply chose to forget it, and now you are merely recalling it.
So every unit of consciousness benefits every other unit of consciousness -- this is the concept of the interconnection of all things. No matter whether those units form a stone, a raindrop, an apple, a cat, a frog, or the shape of a pair of shoes -- note that a shape is mentioned here, not just living things; a shape is also an existence. A shoe presses out a footprint, and that footprint is also an existence. Manufactured products are also composed of atoms and molecules, and their existence is also transformed into units of consciousness and then formed upon the units of consciousness that make up material components. No matter what you become, ultimately the most fundamental layer composing this material form must be the unit of consciousness. Within the unit of consciousness, there is also existence within a consciousness network or a network of consciousness energy. When one point knows something, all other points also know it; when one point learns, all other points also learn. It is a process of holistic benefit.
So then you know that the hundredth monkey experiment, or the collective subconscious of humanity, is not a guess or an illusion; it truly exists.
The Manifest and Unmanifest Consciousness
Seth says:
Truly, what you have is a consciousness that is concretely manifest and not concretely manifest, but only relatively so.
You humans are a consciousness that has already manifested, and that also includes what has not manifested. The manifested is our body and the environment around us; the unmanifested is all the possibilities latent in the future. You humans are just such a body of consciousness, with a manifested part and an unmanifested part.
You do not perceive the consciousness of objects -- most people cannot perceive the consciousness of a stone. It does not manifest to you, because your range of activity requires boundaries to frame it.
Why is consciousness sealed inside our bodies? Consciousness is clearly an energy wave, and we are clearly in a shared energy field, a consciousness field. Why can we not communicate directly through consciousness, why can we not have direct telepathy, why must we still divide ourselves into separate individuals through the boundary of a skin or a physical form?
Because we need it this way. We come to the physical world to experience, and we need it this way. You say, why can we not use that state? You are already in that state; you do not need to use that state again. You are already in the energy field or the consciousness field, an omnipotent existence that transcends time and space and is not limited by any time or space. That you already exists, and is already being experienced. You are here now precisely to experience turning yourself into one independent individual after another, and then interacting among individuals. It is against such a background, under such a premise, that you create and experience. You chose this yourself. The part you think you did not choose already exists; the things you think you do not have already exist. You think you do not have them because you are looking from the physical perspective, but in fact you and all things are one.
Tools and Potential
When you understand this, you can understand what Seth says:
All of your manufactured products also come from the realm of dreams.
Your products, all the tools you make, cell phones, computers, and even the stone tools of ancient times -- although they were first conceived abstractly, in the same way man made his first tools. You may not understand what is meant by "starting from the abstract." The stone knives, stone axes, and stone hammers used by ancient people in the Paleolithic era -- we can call these a kind of abstract conception. Can you imagine that later human beings could manufacture such advanced chips, placing billions upon billions of transistors on such a tiny chip -- between such precise operations and the most primitive tools of stone tied to wooden sticks, you think this is how we evolved. Actually, you already had all of today's human technology and the technology future humans will use long ago -- it was all in your dreams long ago. But in order to make these things, you must start from the most ancient beginnings, you must go from an abstract concept of a tool to a concrete concept of a tool. You must go from having an idea of a telescope in your mind to finally turning it into two lenses placed together, making a telescope. You seem to have come from the abstract, but actually you already had the concrete image -- the concrete design was already there.
Seth goes on to say:
Man is innately endowed with all of these abilities, the abilities that give him his characteristics, and those abilities which, in your terms, are yet to be developed.
Man is innately endowed with the ability he himself gave himself as the characteristics of being human -- the ability to make tools, to use tools, to invent language, these are the abilities that give him his characteristics, the abilities by which he is called human, and he is innately endowed with them. And there are also those abilities yet to be developed, that is, the part of potential that has not yet been actualized.
It may be easier to understand using other species as examples. A spider is innately endowed with its abilities as a spider, innately knowing how to spin webs; a mouse innately knows how to dig holes; a beaver innately knows how to live in dams, innately knowing from birth how to go build a dam in a river and then catch fish. The part you call your characteristics -- the reason you call yourself you is that you are matched with corresponding abilities, and these abilities were given to you from the very beginning. To put it bluntly, if you call yourself human, you are certainly matched with the abilities a human should have. And then there are some potentials you have not yet developed.
It is not that these abilities yet to be developed have never been used by our human race. Remember, that is not the case. Rather, on the main line of the continuity of civilization as you think of it, he has not yet focused upon them. That is, in our space-time, in the development of our civilization, we have not yet focused on those latent abilities. But that does not mean that in other parallel worlds and other probable earths, in other main lines of development of other civilizations, other probable human civilizations have not used those technologies that our human civilization has not used -- perhaps they have long since used them.
For example, in the age of Atlantis4, suppose it was an age of the past; for example, in ancient Egypt, people used sound waves to move stones and build the pyramids, and this ability we do not have, yet the people of that period did have it. This potential is not, as you think, something our human race has never developed. On other probable lines of development of civilization, other human beings may have already realized the technology of those abilities.
The hints concerning those abilities -- you say you do not understand those potentials, and he says you will be given some hints. Those hints are always in the dream state, in your art, in religion, and even in science. Those space-times parallel to ours are also composed of units of consciousness, and the things their human beings have learned in the main line of their civilization's progress will be transmitted to the human beings of our space-time through the underlying layer of units of consciousness, uploaded through dreams, art, religion, science, and many other fields.
Tesla and the Jet Engine
So now you know why that inventor Tesla had the alternating current generator simply appear in his mind in a dream or in his imagination, and then he drew it out, without going through an experimental stage. Keep in mind, it was not built up bit by bit from the clumsiest initial idea, not like the most primitive thing we do in high school physics experiments where a wire moving in magnetic field lines produces a current -- it was not like that. Tesla did not invent the alternating current motor that way5; he thought of it all at once, the rotor and the stator, the magnetic fields, how the current was generated, and so on -- he thought of it all at once. It was not like what you imagine, an evolutionary iterative process from simple to complex; from the very start it emerged as a fully formed product, a very mature product.
Let me give another example, and you will find it even more unbelievable -- the jet engine. We ride jet airplanes every day, so how was the jet engine built? It was not like what you imagine, building a round thing with some content, lighting it up, and then tinkering with it. No. From the very beginning there was already a fairly mature prototype, and then it was built according to that, and the moment it was started and ignited, it worked. Everything after that has been improvements, but the prototype was already fully formed from the start, and even now there has not been much change, only changes in performance and optimization. But the overall technical prototype and technical principles of this jet engine have not undergone any major improvement -- of course its performance is already far beyond what it once was, but all of that has been improvements made on that original prototype design. How did it come about in the very beginning? Nobody knows. It was not derived from some initially rough mathematical model; no. Even now, scientists do not have an effective method for the mathematical theory and models of the jet engine; they can only obtain results through experiments, through their own ideas and experiments. All engines, especially jet engines including rocket engines, absolutely require experimentation, because they have no way to calculate them purely through theory. The process of this invention was simply made through experimenting as they went along. As for its thrust, thrust-to-weight ratio, combustion values, and so on, it seems it did not come step by step starting from a sketch -- it was known all at once, and as for how he knew it, nobody knows.
They also appear in politics and business, but as a background of intuition that is largely unmanifested. This includes political systems, social forms, social governance models, including business models, and so on, all of which can reflect this. But these parts of potential that come from other parallel space-times, transmitted through units of consciousness, which we are going to develop, mostly present themselves as a background of intuition -- that is, as an inspiration, an insight, or a hint given to you in a dream, and most of them are ignored.
Seth says that later in this book we will come back to this, so we will not expand on it here; it is too complicated.
According to his final research, Tesla was working on an energy tower6. According to his theory, once that energy tower was built, people on Earth would from then on be able to use free energy; our energy would no longer cost money, and it would be inexhaustible. Had he not invented the generator? Does the generator not still require an energy source to drive it? Whether water power or thermal power, you still need something to make it turn in order to generate electricity. For the latter half of his life, Tesla was researching a generating mechanism that required no energy source at all, that could generate electricity and produce energy on its own. It is said that he had already achieved very good results, but this involves a lot of dark speculation and history. You can search for the things Tesla researched in his later years. You can imagine what it would mean if humanity had the ability of unlimited energy, and clean energy at that, with no need to burn coal, and at very low cost, with energy flowing continuously. Do you know what unlimited energy means? It means you could do many things you previously would never have dared to imagine. Energy is the thing that limits us human beings, because humanity has always been constrained by the law of conservation of energy. And unlimited energy means obtaining energy from other dimensions for the use of people in our dimension. In any case, this is a very legendary figure, and you can go learn about his history.
Dreams and the Source of Civilization
In this passage, Seth is essentially trying to tell you that human potential and the development of human civilization have many branches and many main lines. The main line we are on now is the one we can feel and experience, and there are others.
Dreams have always given humanity a kind of impetus, a sense of purpose, and a sense of meaning. Why are dreams the place that gives you impetus? Why do we say "dream" and not "imagination" -- why must it be "dream"? Because only in dreams do you get this kind of unfettered imagination, and this unfettered imagination brings you a sense of purpose and meaning, and makes you want to realize it. What is purpose? It is that you want to realize it. What is meaning? It is that you want to complete it. And dreams can always give you this feeling. We often talk about the house in our dreams, the dream house, the big house in our dreams, the boy in our dreams, the girl in our dreams, the lover in our dreams -- why must it be "in our dreams"? Because dreams give you this impetus.
Dreams have given us the raw material out of which civilization is formed. Our civilization has all arisen out of dreams. Seth says that the history of the world should really be the history of dreams, rather than the history we ordinarily record. Why? Because dreams are more or less responsible for all historical developments. Dreams are the true primary driving force that pushes forward the development of society or world history. Dreams are responsible for the development of agriculture, for industry, for the rise and fall of nations, for the glory of Rome and the destruction of Rome7. The progress of present-day technology can be traced back almost to the invention of printing8, to Edison's inventions9 -- all of these are direct manifestations of inspiration received in dreams. All the inventions and creations in human history, technological civilization, and art have their source in dreams.
But Seth says:
If I were to tell you now that this is true, then obviously, when I say that your physical world arises out of the world of dreams, I must necessarily mean something very different from the usual definition of dream reality.
When I say that your world all comes from a world of dreams, the world of dreams I am talking about is definitely not the dream you ordinarily understand. This dream is not that dream. It is not the kind of dream we ordinarily have. That dream is very clear, very concrete, a combination of thought, of mind, of wisdom, of intuition, of inspiration -- not the kind of dream human beings have now. He must emphasize this: do not think that just because of the word "dream," our ordinary dreaming can create the world, and that we do not need to do anything but dream -- wrong. That dream is the kind of dream All That Is has, the kind of dream your entity has. In that dream, just like our world here, it is equally real, equally logical, equally a combination of its wisdom and intuition.
Seth says:
I could have chosen another word. I could have avoided the word "dream," but I wanted to emphasize each person's intimate connection with that reality.
Why do I still want to use the word "dream"? Because I want to emphasize your connection with that dream reality, and that reality does indeed take place within the dream state that you recognize as dreaming. In other words, it is not that you can create your world through dreaming; rather, what creates your outer world is an inner world that you have. If you want to experience that inner world, apart from other methods, for ordinary people the only way is through the dream state. The only place where your inner world and your outer world intersect is this dream. But what actually creates the outer world is your inner world, not the dream. And as for your inner world, the only way you can feel it is through dreams; it will only occur in your dreams, for most people.
Many of us are studying and practicing. What are we studying? What are we practicing? It is being able to enter your inner world not in the dream state, but within your waking consciousness -- that is a goal we want to reach through practice or study. This is not the reason why ordinary people can create the world through dreaming. If it could be realized in dreams, then everyone can dream, everyone can have pleasant dreams -- so why can it not be realized?
So Seth uses the "dream world" to tell you this: only in dreams can your inner world reveal a little trace or a little shadow of itself, allowing you to feel it and catch a glimpse of the existence of the inner world. But what creates your outer world is always the inner world, not the dream. Remember this subtle relationship.
On Pain and Poverty
Seth said:
Such analogies will help you intuitively understand the existence of conditions such as pain and poverty, which otherwise might seem to have no adequate explanation.
Such analogies can help you understand intuitively -- he used the word "intuitively," because it can no longer be explained to you in words. What does it help you understand? The existence of conditions such as pain and poverty. What does that mean? You do not need to become a person who experiences pain; you can also experience pain in dreams. In dreams you can also experience this kind of shift into other identities -- you may suddenly feel that you have gone bankrupt, become poor, lost your source of income. You do not need to use the physical body to experience that pain; in dreams you can also experience that pain and that poverty.
Why did he suddenly say this? Because today Jane and he discussed why we need to experience, know, or understand pain and poverty. What he means is that in dreams you can also experience it. And true poverty and pain come from the inner world.
Seth said:
I hope also to say something about those portions of nature that certainly seem to imply the survival of the fittest, the triumph of the strongest, or about the situation in which, on the one hand, there is the punitive action of a vengeful god, and on the other, the victory of an evil force.
The reason you are able to experience pain and poverty, and can experience these things in dreams, is that you then feel that nature is a matter of the survival of the fittest, the strong preying on the weak. You cannot feel the existence of love in nature; what you feel is the survival of the fittest, the strong preying on the weak. And then you also feel that on the one hand there is the punitive action of a vengeful god -- here he is referring to God, who, according to Western descriptions, is highly vengeful; if you go back to the myths of ancient Greece, the gods there were far more vengeful than human beings. For example, the great flood, our original sin, and so on -- these are all punishments from God. On the other side is the victory of an evil force -- the violence you see, the terrorists, they often succeed; 9/11 and so on, they all succeeded. What you see is that in this world bad people seem to act without restraint and without punishment, as if this world were a matter of the strong preying on the weak, as if this world were full of poverty, pain, and hunger. These are your feelings; the news, reports, and media you see, or your feelings, are all like this.
Seth continued:
For now, however, in the story we have begun, we still have an intermittent universe that appears and disappears.
He suddenly jumped to this sentence again, and the passage in between seems a bit disconnected. What he actually wants to express is this: we feel that this world is so bad and has so many problems -- God is not good, terrorists are not good either -- yet they seem to be winning, as if bad people always get their way, bad people live ten thousand years while good people die young. All of this is a reaction and refraction of your inner world, a manifestation of your inner world. In dreams you have also dreamed of these things; in your inner world you have also created these things. Of course, from a higher perspective, there is no distinction between good and evil, right and wrong; these are all different experiences you want to have. You may ask, why is our world like this? Why do we experience such war, poverty, hunger, and even the spread of epidemics? Because we always have this kind of cognition of good and evil; there is no way around it -- living in the physical world, we have this kind of dualistic view. But the things within you will include these things; there is no distinction of right or wrong, good or bad; it is simply a kind of experience.
That passage does not have much internal connection with the passage before it or the one after it; he could have continued directly from the previous passage, and this middle part can be skipped.
The Process of the Universe's Manifestation
What is he saying in this passage?
In the story you have just begun, we still have an intermittent universe that flickers in and out.
What does "flickers in and out" mean? One moment you are in a dream, the next moment you are in a materialized body, and then you return to your inner world — your attention shifts among different realities. One moment you have a dream body in the reality of dreams, the next moment you are in your physical reality, and then you are in your inner world. In this process of shifting among different alterations of consciousness, from an objective or an observer's point of view, our universe at its very beginning was like a light flickering on and off — it was not solid, now bright, now dark. Then it gradually manifested for longer periods of time; the dark times became fewer and fewer, and the bright times became more and more, so its materialized state became more and more stable.
Seth says:
What you really had in the beginning was an image without form.
He deliberately translated the word "image" as "yixiang" rather than "tuxiang" — this is a way Teacher Wang Jiqing helps you understand. Translating it as "yixiang" is very good. You have no form, but you have an image — that would be even more confusing; using "yixiang" lets you understand from a deeper context: from the very beginning, although we had no form, we had an image — an image of what form we wanted to become. It is like a little girl who always asks me whether she will be beautiful when she grows up; in her mind there is an image of what she wants to become when she grows up. Those images are the forms of young women she has seen after they have grown up; that is her image. Does everyone have a picture of their ideal partner? Yes, but it is more of an image. That cannot be called a picture.
So he says, at the beginning our universe had no concrete shape at all, only an image. Gradually it took on shape, and then it had shape. This process was like a light flickering on and off, and then stabilizing into a shape that had not yet fully materialized.
Let me give a vivid example: in the distance you see a light, and it flickers on and off. When it is dark more often, it has no shape; you can only see it flash once. When it is bright more and more often, and the frequency of its brightness gets higher and higher, when it gets fast enough — like a fluorescent lamp flickering more than 50 times per second10 — your naked eye can no longer see it as a light that is now bright and now dark; you see it as a lamp tube. When our universe flickered brighter and brighter — manifesting more and more, dark less and less — it slowly formed a shape. That shape was not a concrete substance; it was a play of light and shadow. You can understand it as a shadow of light or a shadow of an idea. It had not yet formed a physical entity; it was only a shape, like an outline of light, or like a shadow projected by a projector.
Seth says:
Then these took on all the characteristics of what you now consider to be the stuff that forms matter.
These shapes took on those material things, that is to say, these shapes materialized themselves, made themselves physical. You could also say these shapes filled themselves with matter. The final material events we see came about in just this way.
The Two-Way Operation of Consciousness
When this process happens, on our end -- the materialized end -- your consciousness takes on more and more specialized orientations and greater organization. Our consciousness is constantly specializing, and specialization is individuation -- from a unified field of consciousness, it concretizes hundreds of billions of identities, giving each one its unique characteristics and identity, and each one's attributes are different. Your consciousness is doing this work. Then it organizes these identities into larger identities, which we call the process of forming a gestalt. First it differentiates into countless small units of consciousness, then organizes these small units of consciousness into slightly larger units of consciousness, then organizes these units into even larger units of consciousness, which are atoms, and atoms then form molecules -- this process, our consciousness is doing it all the time.
And on the other end -- the end where consciousness has not yet become matter, that is, the end of the field of consciousness, or what we call the end of the energy field:
Consciousness frees itself from the larger field of activity to allow for this kind of specialized behavior.
On the end of the energy field, each unit of consciousness stands out from within it and frees itself. Only by freeing itself can it specialize; if it does not free itself, it is the overall network of consciousness, a whole, a unity. Only when it becomes individualized, when it becomes independent from within, becoming an independent unit of consciousness, can it form its specialized behavior, can it form an individual. It is two-ended: one end constantly differentiates, becoming tiny particles, and then organizes; the other end constantly makes itself independent from the field of consciousness and hands itself over to this end. This end then gives the independent units of consciousness, one by one, special attributes, and then lets them combine separately into various organizations, then organize again into larger organizations. The birth of the universe of this world, at the very beginning, was just such a process, with both ends working simultaneously.
Seth says:
All of these units of consciousness, operating as entities, or operating in the manner of particles, or in the manner of waves, or in the manner of dynamics.
Here translating it as "dynamics" is not good; it should be a kind of "particle" manner. Remember here it is "or or or" -- why did it become "or"? Didn't you say it is both particle and wave and field? What is being spoken of here is the state after it has freed itself. When it is in the field of consciousness, it is of course all, it is the three states; but after it has differentiated out, it either exists in the form of waves, or in the form of material particles, or in the form of a field -- for example, a gravitational field is a kind of field.
Seth says:
In those terms, of course, consciousness forms the experience of time, rather than the other way around.
From this perspective, consciousness forms the experience of time. Note, it does not say consciousness forms time; it says consciousness forms the experience of time. For us, time is just an experience, a kind of experiencing. Time is an experience of consciousness, not the other way around -- it is not that time exists first and then consciousness experiences within it. No, consciousness comes first, and then consciousness can form an experience of time.
Then he says the dictation is over.
Rob's Notes After the Session
Seth said good night to you all, and that we will have a session, with the topic up to you and the time up to you. When he said "we will have a session," he meant that before Christmas they still had one more session, because this was already December 19, and Christmas was right around the corner. Seth's final remark was rather humorous, and it reflected one of the reasons Jane had been in a bad mood before the session -- she felt conflicted between the book sessions and some of the other Seth material we had been wanting to get. What Seth meant by this remark was that we have a session, and you can ask any questions you want to ask, rather than it being a book session.
The two of them had also accumulated a lot of questions, including Jonestown, the Iran hostage crisis11, the topics of Framework 1 and Framework 2, and a subject about human reproduction that had been raised earlier in the year. Rob had discussed it in two papers and had also asked this question: in a normal male ejaculation there are roughly two hundred million to five hundred million sperm12, but only one sperm joins with the egg. He wanted to ask what role those sperm that do not join are playing. Only one sperm is needed each time, so why produce two hundred million to five hundred million sperm12? What are all these also-rans doing? Isn't this a waste?
He also wanted to know:
Within a man's body, there must necessarily be deep biological communication going on among all the sperm, and why in a particular ejaculation the most suitable sperm is apparently not always the one that fertilizes the egg.
Do these sperm communicate among themselves internally? Do we select the strongest one from among these sperm to join with the egg? Yet experimental results often show that the sperm that joins with the egg is not the best one among that batch of sperm. Why not the best? If there is communication among them, why can't they select the best one to join? What exactly is going on in the middle of all this? Seth had already given him some answers in one or two sessions, and he wanted more.
Rob said:
I had originally planned to present some excerpts here from our joint material, but I now see that I do not have that much space.
He had originally wanted to pull out some of the highlights and put them here, because Seth had also given brief answers, but he felt that the space clearly did not allow for it, so he did not mention them.
As it turned out, everything Jane delivered today was excellent. Her attitude was very steady, and she had far fewer pauses than in her Monday night session. Although she did not reach the peak state she had touched in the previous session, that quality of that state was still present tonight as well -- although she did not enter the peak state, elements of that peak state were present in tonight's session. For example, the middle passage was a bit baffling, and that passage was clearly not from when Jane was at her best. Because it involved a specific question for her and Rob -- about why there is still so much hunger, poverty, and war in our world -- the explanation Seth gave there clearly did not make the matter clear. If you compare it with the previous session, you can see that the rigor of the logic and the fullness of the state there were both somewhat stronger than in this session.
But we still have to thank Jane for delivering such wonderful content to us even in such a poor physical state, which is truly rare. You can imagine that by this time she had long been unable to move in bed -- and that inability to move is not the kind you might think of, like not being able to get out of bed; it was more severe than that. Her joints could not move. Can you imagine what it feels like for a person whose joints cannot move? And she could only lie in one particular posture -- it was not that she could lie however she wanted, because her knee joints, ankle joints, and many other joints were stiff, and she could only remain in one particular posture. You can imagine that under these circumstances Jane still delivered such wonderful material about the origin of the universe.
We still have to thank Jane, thank Rob, thank Seth, for being able, through the cooperation of the three of them, to deliver such wonderful content. Although there are still a few flaws in it, the flaws do not obscure the virtues.
