Adjudicating experiment
This ontological assertion cannot be directly adjudicated by a single experiment. A narrower implication can be tested: prospectively collect approximately 3,000–5,000 cardiac arrest events across 30–50 hospitals, automatically display timestamped random targets that are not visible from the hospital bed, and simultaneously record EEG, cerebral oxygenation, and resuscitation phases. After recovery, survivors first provide free reports and then complete blinded matching. Duration: 3–5 years. The primary evaluable sample must consist of individuals for whom targets were actually presented and who can complete interviews; the total enrollment must not be passed off as the number of evaluable target exposures.

If acquisition of new information during a period without brain function capable of supporting information processing could be rigorously confirmed, it would challenge the assumption that conscious encoding of new information depends on a nervous system that is functional at that time.

Low; “independent to some extent” does not distinguish spatial independence, temporal independence, persistence of consciousness, or persistence of personality, each of which requires separate operationalization.

Cardiac arrest does not imply a sustained, complete absence of brain activity, and the absence of a scalp EEG signal cannot establish that all neural activity has ceased. “Currently unexplained” does not imply “independent of matter.”
