First, provide an operational definition of consciousness independent of growth success and goal-directed behavior; otherwise, it cannot be adjudicated whether consciousness is necessary. A two-tier study can be conducted: approximately 96 independent microbial lineages evolved over 1000–3000 generations over 1–2 years, testing pre-registered variation–selection models via genomics and competition experiments; approximately 300 regenerating individuals or tissue samples in batch culture receive bioelectric interventions over 6–12 months, with blinded quantification of morphological changes.
