Physical System (physical system) Topic Archive
1. What are Seth's specific claims about this concept? How many times were they stated, in which books, and did the wording change over time?
Claims in Session 242 of The Early Sessions Book 6 (early period, around 1966):
- When a surviving personality communicates with a personality existing within the physical system, a partial reorganization of the surviving personality is involved, in which the ego is temporarily given greater dominance [early-sessions-6 §242].
- Without this reorganization, communication is generally impossible, because the surviving personality finds it difficult to influence a personality still ego-oriented and within the physical system [early-sessions-6 §242].
Claims in Session 101 of The Early Sessions Book 3 (middle period, around 1965):
- You are obviously in the physical system, in the fourth dimension as you call it [early-sessions-3 §101].
Claims in Session 334 of The Early Sessions Book 8 (late period, 1967):
- The inner self always projects outward within your system, linking the physical system together through multiple and complex reactions [early-sessions-8 §334].
- Physical entities merely use the physical system as a testing board [early-sessions-8 §334].
Claims in Session 409 of The Early Sessions Book 8 (late period, 1968):
- The apparent boundaries of your own physical system are composed of psychic intensities and projections emitted by those entities that determine their experience of physical reality [early-sessions-8 §409].
Changes in wording over time:
- Early period (Session 242): focused on the physical system as the contextual field for personality existence and communication; wording centered on the ego, the surviving personality, and communication mechanisms [early-sessions-6 §242].
- Middle period (Session 101): placed the physical system within a dimensional framework; wording shifted toward corresponding associations with the concept of dimensions in physics [early-sessions-3 §101].
- Late period (Sessions 334, 409): wording clearly shifted toward emphasizing that the physical system is automatically projected from inner reality, that the system's boundaries are constituted by psychic intensity, and introduced the "coordinates" theory to explain the system's composition and operation [early-sessions-8 §334, §409].
2. What mechanisms does he provide?
Mechanism of physical system composition: The physical system and its physical objects are composed of the electromagnetic reality behind them. These electromagnetic realities are not all materialized, and their degrees of materialization vary. For example, thoughts possess a specific electromagnetic identity, fall within a specific intensity range, and can be received by another person simultaneously open to that range [early-sessions-5 §207]. Actions within the physical system can be interrupted so that the source of communication stands out; data must be converted or transformed from one electromagnetic energy range to another before it can be received by the physical senses [early-sessions-5 §207].
Mechanism of projection within the physical system: The inner self's projection outward as the outer form is automatic. Objects in the physical universe are merely symbols expressing other realities existing in the private domain; the inner always projects outward into your system [early-sessions-8 §334]. The intensity of inner feeling is the dominant factor—intense and brief hatred or fear can cause tragic physical circumstances; pure joy, even if brief, can change the direction of a life; low-intensity negative feelings can accumulate into an overall negative emotional atmosphere and be projected as physical reality [early-sessions-8 §334].
Mechanism of energy operation within the physical system: In the trance state, the electromagnetic aura surrounding and belonging to the physical body changes, forming a kind of electromagnetic instability that enables the individual to process a greater frequency and range. In the fully ego-directed state of consciousness, however, the ego attempts to maintain a rigid electromagnetic balance and therefore cannot do so [early-sessions-5 §207]. Seth could seal off a portion of the physical system so that sound would not propagate outward from it, creating an effect similar to an invisible cabinet, in which energy was concentrated and directed [early-sessions-5 §207].
3. Are there observable inferences or explicit predictions (including time, quantity, conditions)?
- The aging rate of the physical organism during sleep differs from that in the waking state, and if scientists have not yet discovered this phenomenon, it will be discovered in the near future. [early-sessions-5 §208]
- Atoms pulse between "existence" and "nonexistence," and their fluctuations have highly predictable patterns and rhythms. [seth-speaks §16]
4. Where did he say science at the time was wrong, and in what direction should it look?
- Science treats space, time, size, and density as objective properties of physical reality, but Seth pointed out that these are in fact products of perception and have very little to do with the nature of basic reality [early-sessions-6 §248].
- Science is limited by the perceptual habits of its own system, and the same energy will be perceived as completely different realities in different systems; therefore, explaining the basic structure of the universe through current physical perception inevitably produces misunderstanding [early-sessions-6 §248].
- Science has not recognized that the physical universe is formed from the inside out, that the external environment is a reflection of the inner environment, and that psychic energy is the only reality from which all things arise [early-sessions-6 §248].
- Science should turn to the use of inner senses, trance states, hypnotic experience, and intuitive imagination to explore the universe, because the universe is transparent to the inner senses, rather than relying solely on external instruments [early-sessions-6 §248].
- Physics must advance in the direction of the fifth dimension, because once one goes beyond the fourth-dimensional universe, one gains the freedom that makes the attributes of previous dimensions unnecessary [early-sessions-3 §101].
- The dimensions that physics speaks of are still the result of its own reference points and the closed system within which it operates; width, height, and length have no meaning in dimensions that do not exist in your known space [early-sessions-3 §101].
- Science's explanation of the expansion of the universe is wrong; the theory is more true as applied to time than to the physical universe, and the physical universe is not expanding as currently thought [early-sessions-5 §221].
- The linear concept of time is wrong; energy moves from the core in all directions, and the apparent differences between past, present, and future arise only from perception. Seth suggested an inverted time system as a model closer to the truth of time [early-sessions-5 §221].
- Science's "flat" view of the universe is related to the limitations of sensory perception, and its mechanistic model of bodily wear and tear was also opposed [dreams-evolution-1 §886, §898].
5. What experiments or exercises did he suggest? What did Jane and Rob actually do and observe at the time?
Seth suggested that Jane conduct psychological time experiments and noted that psychological experiments as a whole provided Jane with an excellent channel for the use of energy [early-sessions-3 §140]. Seth once suggested that Jane and Rob regularly use a pendulum in their work [early-sessions-4 §153]. For mental health, Seth suggested that Jane and Rob develop proficiency in establishing communication between the ego and the subconscious, so as to improve the efficiency of overall behavior [early-sessions-4 §153].
Jane actually conducted psychological time experiments: she usually attempted the experiments between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 noon [early-sessions-3 §140]. During the experiments, Jane reported an "extreme sensation of weightlessness," without the feeling of the body pressing against the bed, but rather a sense of suspension [early-sessions-3 §122]. She also repeatedly reported intense sensations of vibration and movement during the experiments [early-sessions-3 §122]. In one experiment, Jane experienced a persistent dissociative state as a result of ten consecutive days of experiments, feeling "half dissolved," and was unable to restore herself to a normal state on her own at the end of the experiment [early-sessions-3 §140]. Seth explained this phenomenon as the momentum gained when concentrated energy accelerated, propelling itself forward, with the ego resisting the sudden increase in energy concentration out of fear, preventing the suggestion from being carried out [early-sessions-3 §140]. Seth therefore advised Jane not to conduct any external experiments for a week [early-sessions-3 §140]. Jane also once heard a male whisper saying "twelve-oh-five" while at the edge of sleep; after verifying with the pendulum, she concluded that she had received a random telepathic message [early-sessions-4 §153]. She also once stood in grayish-white smoke while half awake and half asleep, smelled smoke, and the experience ended when a sense of panic arose [early-sessions-4 §153].
After Hatha yoga practice, Rob reached an extremely relaxed state in which he could perceive himself entering inner states such as dream revelation while lying still (including hypnotic imagery, hearing voices, etc.), and could perceive himself undergoing these experiences; but when he actively pulled himself back to full wakefulness, the contents disappeared [early-sessions-6 §246]. Seth mentioned that the "so-called astral body" often travels when people unknowingly attempt experiments, and that people unintentionally receive telepathic messages as well; Seth said this does not mean that conscious experiments will not work [early-sessions-6 §246]. Seth said he was still waiting for the day when they could simultaneously be aware of their dreams, be fully awake and aware of the physical environment, and still function normally in the material universe [early-sessions-6 §246].
In a conversation with Peggy Gallagher, Seth suggested that she give herself the suggestion before sleep to "sleep on the right side rather than the left" to remove pressure on the affected side; not to support herself with her left elbow during the day; to stand frequently and raise both arms above her head; to frequently suggest that the affected area had sufficient circulation; not to take aspirin; and to drink two cups of coffee at breakfast [early-sessions-5 §238]. Seth also pointed out that Peggy's morning yoga neck circles were done too quickly, and that she should not suddenly lower her head at the end of the movement; the movement should be slowed. Yoga was in itself very good for her and should be continued at an appropriate pace [early-sessions-5 §238].
6. What supplements or contradictions do other concepts in the corpus provide in relation to this concept?
The physical system and root assumptions
- Root assumptions are the basic premises that form a particular system of existence. The physical mechanisms of the material system are equipped to perceive reality through the lens of specific root assumptions, and it is almost impossible to perceive reality otherwise using only the physical senses [early-sessions-7 §285].
- All ideas about reality must be glimpsed through the "web of matter," which is the materialized form of these assumptions, enabling people to observe reality in a highly specialized manner [early-sessions-7 §285].
- The inner senses are not bound by the root assumptions of the physical system; therefore, many psychic or subjective experiences appear to contradict physical laws, because people try to explain them according to the root assumptions of physical reality [early-sessions-7 §285].
- The root assumptions of physical reality are valid within physical reality itself, but are in no way applicable to other systems [early-sessions-7 §285].
The physical system and personality, biological structure
- Part of the personality is strongly a product of the physical system; the entire biological organization of the body is trained from infancy to respond to specific patterns based on physical root assumptions [early-sessions-7 §285].
- During the alliance within the physical system, the personality is diffused throughout the cellular structure; the interaction between the biological system, the electrical system, and the personality structure in fact constitutes the reality of the individual human being [early-sessions-4 §165].
- The organizational structure of perception is artificial and learned in biological terms, not a basic biological structure, but changing it may cause disturbances throughout the entire physical system [early-sessions-7 §285].
- The personality exists in a diffused manner within the physical system, so it is most fundamentally composed of those biological inheritances and cellular structural properties that existed long before multicellular existence [early-sessions-4 §165].
The physical system and other systems
- There are other systems that are located in the physical universe but do not belong to it, and that do not deal with matter at all, such as an "inverted time system" [early-sessions-5 §220].
- Although all systems are ultimately interconnected, certain other systems have no direct relationship with the physical system [early-sessions-5 §220].
- In most cases, the physical personality system responds to stimuli that appear to the ego to be widely separated in time, because the parts of the personality other than the ego are not bound by physical time [early-sessions-4 §165].
The physical system and its relationship with the electrical system
- In many respects it can be said that the physical system is an effect caused by the electrical field; the electrical system is an attraction through which physical material existence is made possible [early-sessions-3 §123].
7. Questions not yet asked
- Can Seth's claim that "the electromagnetic aura changes in the trance state and forms instability" be measured as a repeatable anomalous pattern via EEG/MEG?
- If "the physical system is projected from the inside out" holds, can statistically significant deviations of surrounding random physical events from baseline be detected in strictly controlled meditation or mental intention experiments?
- Seth proposed that atoms pulse between existence and nonexistence with a predictable rhythm. Does this prediction contradict or coincide with existing data on atomic wave function collapse or quantum fluctuations in quantum physics?
- Can the claim that "low-intensity negative emotions accumulate and project into physical reality" be tested by longitudinally tracking the correlation between emotional states and the surrounding material environment (e.g., household dust composition)?
- Regarding the prediction of different aging rates during sleep, can experiments comparing telomere length or epigenetic clock changes across different sleep stages in subjects be designed to verify it?
