Lesson 6

Reincarnation: Relationships, Gender and Personality

For Seth, reincarnation is not reward and punishment but an arrangement for learning; relationships carry across lives, and everyone holds both a male and a female side.

  • Chapter 4The Reincarnational DramaMike's commentary

This chapter uses the metaphor of drama to explain reincarnational lives: each person is simultaneously the playwright, the director, and the actor, creating the characters, the sets, and the themes, yet because of deep involvement forgets that this is their own creation. Multiple lives are basically staged simultaneously, and time, space, and progress are presupposed assumptions within the play. The multidimensional personality learns to create through the reincarnational drama, and consciousness is in a state of "becoming." The environment is formed by one's own thoughts and emotions; reincarnation is not predestined by past lives, and a broader reality can be perceived through the inner senses.

  • Chapter 12Reincarnational RelationshipsMike's commentary

This chapter centers on interpersonal relationships across reincarnations. Seth explains that emotions and beliefs attract relationships and experiences of a similar kind; hatred can entangle a person with the object of their hatred for many lifetimes, and only genuine love and compassion can dissolve rigid ideas of good and evil. Families, villages, and other groups may reunite because of shared purposes or emotions, but relationships are not fixed repetitions. Reincarnation is a tool chosen by the individual according to need, with no predetermined rules; there is no need to trace past lives, because changing present thoughts and emotions can change the present and future lives.

  • Chapter 13Reincarnation, Dreams, and the Hidden Male and Female within the SelfMike's commentary

This chapter begins with Jung and his encounter with *The Secret of the Golden Flower*, using that as a starting point to explain that within every person there exists a latent incarnation of the other sex, namely the male psyche and the female psyche. They carry the memories and traits of past lives lived as the other sex, balancing gender identity and influencing both the individual and civilization. The chapter also discusses the openness of gender choice in reincarnation, the different timings and ways in which a personality enters the fetus, the birth experience, differences in identification with the body, and how decisions about the next life can be reached in dreams.

Think it over

Decide for yourself whether each statement is right, then open the note.

  • Seth says incarnations happen one after another in chronological order.

    False

From the entity's standpoint all lives exist at once; "before and after" is only how it looks from inside time.Editor

  • Anima and animus are the other-gender aspects present in everyone.

    True

Seth borrows Jung's terms but grounds them in reincarnation: they are your experience of having lived as the other gender.Editor

Take it to Seth

“Seth, I felt I already knew someone the first time we met. Does that have anything to do with reincarnation?”
